If you are an association event and membership program planner, odds are you will be at the ASAE Meeting and Expo being held this week in sunny San Diego. ASAE & The Center for Association Leadership brings out some of the best association organizers in the United States to compare notes and get fresh ideas for membership management, meetings, events and professional development programs.

Certain Software's Director of Marketing, Kimberly Enright, along with other Certain Software experts will be available on the tradeshow floor to discuss solutions for 21st Century online registration, event management and membership programs. You are doing what you can to go green right? You recycle your Starbucks cups, you buy locally grown salad greens, you paid for that carbon offset on your last flight to New York. So if you are a meeting and/or event planner, why not go paperless?

It is true. Online registration is your key to green meetings, events, conferences, symposia, tradeshows, training programs and more. No need to push paper around any more, no more mailing, no more filing. It is the easiest way to go green. Find out more after THE JUMP.

And just in case you need a visual of that wonderful, wonderful feeling you get when you go paperles....

I was recently at the 20th Annual Meeting Professionals International Northern California Chapter Tradeshow. Held at Moscone West during a lovely bout of late winter sunshine in San Francisco, the tradeshow floor was teeming with smiling meetings and events professionals from all over the West Coast.
20th Annual MPINCC Tradeshow at Moscone CenterMaybe it was just the weather or the the promise of an after-party hosted by Bauer Limosines at trendy restaurant Roe down the street, but everyone seemed ready for a day of networking. No tradeshow veteran, however, would hit the floor without the right pair of shoes. I asked a few attendees about their favorite tradeshow pairs...

I enjoy being a Supplier member of The Society of Government Meeting Professionals (SGMP) and associating with meeting planners from federal, state, and local government as well as other providers of meeting services and facilities.

Through the Annual Education Conference and Tradeshow, monthly Chapter Meetings, and Special Events, planners and suppliers come together to review the latest trends in meetings management.  It is very rewarding to help meeting planners improve the quality and cost effectiveness of their meetings.

On February 5, I participated in “Achieving Gold” the goal for this year’s National Capital (NATCAP) Chapter‘s 11th Annual Winter Meeting & Tradeshow.  The event included a selection of sessions designed to keep planners and suppliers on top of current issues.

Sessions included “What is Sarbanes Oxley?” an explanation of the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 (SOX ) and how meeting professionals must comply with this law from an ethical standpoint.  For instance, disclosing information that might provide one potential contractor an edge that others do not have; or bundling meeting services such as morning and afternoon breaks, internet fees, gratuities or perhaps even registration fees.  The bottom line is accountability.  Are we as meeting planners and service providers putting ourselves and our partners at risk of an ethical violation of SOX? Read more.

A very hot and chic session topic was the “Greening” of Government Meetings.  This session demonstrated how the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is leading the way by making environmental responsibility a common business practice.  Did I mention the government has an acronym for anything and everything?  EPA is changing their contract acquisition rules to give preference to meeting services and facilities that consume less and manage resources in environmentally positive ways.  These topics were a perfect segue into the Trade Show.  I enthusiastically talked with attendees about the immediate benefits of using Certain Registration to “Go Green”.  Read more.

Mission accomplished.  I Achieved Gold!

After returning from MPI’s PEC event in Houston, I was asked by a few different industry planners my opinion of the connection spots on the tradeshow floor.  I shared it with them and thought I would share it with everyone else, too.

At first I was a little worried about the set-up of the connection spots (that’s what MPI called them), but after arriving to the show floor and seeing them in person and setting up our booth area it ended up working out very well.  The connection spots opened up the show floor and made it more welcoming.  The thing I liked most about the connection spots was not being in an aisle.  We obtained more exposure and received more booth traffic as a result of the non traditional aisle set up.

Only one negative comment on the connection spots – we recently re-designed our 10x20 booth which cost a significant amount of marketing dollars.  If shows start moving in this direction (which I’m not opposed to) it would mean that we wouldn’t get as much use out of our investment in our booth re-design.

I’m looking forward to seeing this type of set-up at future shows.

Speaking of future shows, be sure to visit the events page to find out where we will be next.

Check back soon for a future blog on my experiences at MPI's PEC - The General Session, Technology Playgrounds, and more.

It seems like one of the latest trends for the large meetings and events tradeshows is to segue off into "technology-focused" mini-tradeshows such as ASAE for associations, ASTD for training and HSMAI for corporate and independent meeting professionals.  We saw this trending last year with MPI-WEC in Montreal when they grouped all of the technology providers for online registration such as Cvent, StarCite and Certain and other meeting and event software technologies in one exhibit area.  It makes so much more sense when you think of the plight of the meeting professional who is inundated with the huge hotel venue exhibits, and trying to get through to the guy (or gal) in the back of the exhibit hall with the event management software demo.  Let's face it would you rather drink a mai tai in the Hawaii booth, or ...well, you get my drift.

We just got back from the ASAE Technology Conference & Expo held in Washington DC last week.  Once again, it was a technology focused show aimed at the association market.  We were one of the only online registration providers to exhibit since most of the big players were the pure membership management providers like iMIS,Q, netFORUM (what is it with the CAPS?).  We enjoy a very good relationship with associations, not only for their annual conference registration, but for their increased attendance through our email marketing and our ability to import a large amount of membership information.

Another team from Certain just got back from MPI-PEC in Houston last week where we participated in the technology playground and demonstrated Certain Registration.  Stand by for more details on this blog from our soon-to-be-CMP Mariesa Ramos....All for now, Kimberly

Last week we moved to a new office in the heart of San Francisco's South Financial District at 75 Hawthorne St.  It is great having all of the different departments together since we moved from two offices into one spacious office - now, IT, development, product management, and sales and marketing are all together. We can share the latest and greatest about online registration forms and event builds around the water cooler!

I am excited to launch this corporate blog for Certain Registration.  It is a first for us...look for blogs from product management, IT, training, and, of course, our chief software guru, Dr. Rick Borry, to follow.  Our intent is to share with you some thoughts and tidbits we come across in the world of online registration for the meetings and events industry, and for conferences and training programs.  Some things will come from best practices from our customers, some from events and tradeshows, or general things we pick up along our journey.  As far as events go - some members of the Certain Registration team just attended the ASAE Tech show in Washington DC this week, and another team is off to MPI-PEC in Houston next week.  Rick Borry is going to host a table on online registration there at the technology breakout, next to the APEX folks. The government team is at the NATCAP chapter in Washington DC so it is proving to be a busy start to February.  All for now, Kimberly
